Hello, this is entomo.
We would like to introduce you to an interview with Entomo CEO Park Ki-hwan in the SK Pro Bono Story last September.
Below is the full interview.

‘BSF’, which generously provides insects, is just like pro bono.

Before I met the social enterprise <entomo>, I didn't know the name of this insect.
Although you can commonly see them around, they are just bugs that you have to wave away with a fan as soon as you see them.
The name of this insect, which looks like a fly at first glance but looks like a large winged fly if you look closely, is ‘black soldier fly.’
I heard there was a company that uses black soldier flies to make pet food, extract oil, and develop fertilizer, so I went to see them.
This is <entomo>, a social enterprise located in Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do.

<entomo>, founded in 2014 by CEO Park Ki-hwan, is a certified social enterprise that is already in its 9th year.
A total of 20 employees work at the headquarters in Cheongju and Siheung, and the business is entering a stable period.
When I first heard the name <entomo>, I was very curious about the meaning behind the mission.
To borrow the meaning of insect, there are words that are more frequently used in everyday life, such as 'bug' or 'insect', but I was surprised that they used the unfamiliar word 'entomo'.
However, 'entomo' is a prefix meaning 'of insects', and it is special in that it is a word that is never used alone.
For example, you can create new meanings related to insects by adding them in front of other words, such as 'entomo farm' and 'entomo product'.
I thought, 'Is there any other word with greater possibility and potential than this as the mission of a company that is using insects to grow businesses in various fields?'

Among the tens of thousands of insects that exist in the world, <entomo> focused on only one.
The black soldier fly is known as an ‘environmental purification insect’ as it has an excellent ability to decompose organic matter from animal excrement and food waste.
However, <entomo> chose to develop animal feed using BSF's insect protein instead of the waste disposal business, which had a developing market at the time of business preparation.
Although he was prepared to face hardships, there was not a single company in the country that could benchmark in the market that was just beginning to form, and CEO Park Ki-hwan had to work hard and research one by one to build the company one by one.
<entomo>, which has been firmly rooted for such a long time, has developed and sold over 40 types of products.
The representative pet food brand 'FORUST' produces pet nutrition and feed using BSF larvae, and also produces feed products for poultry, fish farming, and pig farming.
As a pioneer in the insect feeding market, we manufacture and distribute equipment related to production facilities based on our accumulated know-how, and it is no exaggeration to say that we are doing almost everything that can be done with BSF, including oil and fecal soil used as cosmetic raw materials.

Since they are based in Cheongju, the same place as SK Hynix, they naturally learned about SK Pro Bono, in which many members participate.
"In 2018, the number of employees increased rapidly from 2-3 to 10, but since I had no know-how in organizational management such as personnel management, I asked for advice from SK Pro Bono for the first time. At that time, I was matched with a SK Hynix Pro Bono. “We became so connected that even now that he has retired, I still look upon him as my management mentor.”
The following year, we signed an agreement with SK Hynix Cheongju Safety Team and began receiving safety and firefighting advice.
They generally inspected and informed us of the operational, maintenance, and management aspects that can be taken in the field to prevent fires and safety accidents. They say that because an expert came and directly explained the information, the members had more trust and worked hard to put it into practice.
This year, CEO Park Ki-hwan said he has been providing financial management advice for three months with the pro bono asset management team at (SK Hynix) Icheon headquarters.
He expressed his gratitude by asking whether the current method of profit and loss management, for which he could not find information anywhere, was correct, and receiving advice on the direction for improvement. In addition, he learned how to efficiently manage assets such as Hwasa's supplies, equipment, and facilities.

CEO Park Ki-hwan, who consistently receives advice from SK Pro Bono, says there is a difference between consulting and pro bono.
Consulting only requires you to produce the results you want in exchange for compensation from the customer, so it only tells you what sounds good and tells you nothing more or less than that.
On the other hand, in the case of pro bono, which is done through heart rather than money, it is generous in providing instructions and information and does not hesitate to say bitter or unpleasant words (as the old saying goes, it becomes bone and flesh).
‘If you do that, you’ll be ruined,’ I heard this a lot. It provides clear information in terms of direction. But it never produces results. Please teach me the original method so that I can catch fish myself.
It is said that <entomo> was able to innovate its organizational system across the company thanks to the pro bono workers who sincerely care about and help social enterprises. And in the future, they say that they feel like they have reliable mentors who they can talk to about their concerns and move forward together whenever they face difficulties.

CEO Park Ki-hwan visited SK Pro Bono whenever he needed help with corporate management.
He said he would like to continue to learn systematic organizational culture and systems from large corporations through SK Pro Bono and apply them to <entomo>.
If, like CEO Ki-Hwan Park, it is his first time running a business and everything is difficult and there is a social enterprise that needs help, please visit SK Pro Bono at any time.
SK Pro Bono exists for social enterprises.
